Slow Gardening

Garden writer Felder Rushing gave a great talk titled “Slow Gardening” which he says is not passive gardening, but doing more stuff, carefully selected to be rewarding. Here are a few of his suggestions:

  • Spread out your chores; do a little as you go
  • Develop a long term relaxing garden pursuit such as photography or flower arranging
  • Garden for all the senses: music, birds, fragrance
  • Choose plants well adapted to our soils and climate and plant them well
  • Have something bloom every week
  • Carefully select and display sculpture or other garden art for all year inspiration
  • Lose some lawn, naturalize some areas
